Madder for dyeing red

This plant dye gives a red colour and can be used for dyeing wool and silk in the washing machine or in a pan. The used dyeing material is madder (Rubia tinctorum), one of the 'classical dyes' that were already used in pre-historic times and that was known for its good washingfastness and lightfastness. The roots of the madder contain the dyeing substance. The standard 250 gram bag is normally on stock and is suitable for 500 to 1,500 grams of material, depending on the intensity of the colour you want to obtain. The fixative salts are mixed with the dye (in the packages for wool or silk) or packed in a seperate bag (packages for cotton or linen). Instructions are included in the package but can also be downloaded below. You can also download a colour card here.

New packaging

Until recently these dyes were offered as chopped or grinded plant parts, packed in bags or boxes of 50, 250 or 1000 grams. However, the producer is now gradually switching to extracts. Extracts contain a much higher proportion of effective colouring plant parts, so less is needed to obtain the same dyeing results. However, the labels on the packaging still refers to the weights of the old packaging (50 gr, 250 gr or 1000 gr). As a result the actual packaging sometimes weighs less than is indicated on the label. This can cause confusion. However, the smaller content of the new packs has the same dyeing strength as that of the old ones.
