BOILED WOOL FABRICS: ECO-FRIENDLY, NO MICROPLASTICS, BIODEGRADABLE, BREATHING...

Breathable and natural fleece without microplastics

One of the most popular fabrics is fleece. It is warm, comfortable to wear, and versatile, used in everything from blankets to sporty outdoor jackets. However, a significant problem with fleece fabrics is that they are considered one of the largest sources of microplastic pollution. Fortunately, there are natural alternatives that are just as warm, free of microplastics, and, unlike synthetic fabrics, breathable.

What is boiled wool?

Boiled wool is the English term for what is also called "woolfleece." It is essentially a knitted wool fabric that undergoes a special felting process, giving it unique properties. Compared to woven and felted fabrics like "loden" or "duffel," boiled wool is more elastic because the base fabric is knitted. Think of it like comparing a T-shirt to a pair of pants: a T-shirt is made from a knitted fabric (with loops) and is therefore much stretchier than a pair of pants, which are usually made from a woven fabric.

Additionally, felted wool is warming, durable, temperature-regulating, and flexible.

How is boiled wool fabric made?

The fabric is first knitted and then felted. During felting, the fabric is compressed under water, causing it to shrink, thicken, and become firmer. In eco-friendly and organic production processes, no chemicals like alkalis, softeners, or other substances are added to the water, and the felting occurs at moderate temperatures of around 30°C. After felting, the fabric is cut, rolled, dried, and pressed. Finally, quality control ensures the fabric meets high standards.

What are the properties of boiled wool fabrics?

  • Thermal insulation: Thanks to the structure of wool, boiled wool fabrics provide excellent insulating properties, keeping you warm on cold days.
  • Water-repellent: Boiled wool fabrics are naturally water-repellent, keeping you dry in light rain.
  • Dirt-repellent: Boiled wool is naturally dirt-repellent. Stains can easily be brushed off after drying.

  • Breathable: Boiled wool fabrics allow moisture to escape to the outside air, keeping you comfortable even during physical activities.
  • Elastic: Since the fabric consists of loops (knitted), it remains elastic without requiring the addition of stretchy synthetic fibers like elastane.
  • Raw edge processing: Boiled wool fabrics can be used with unfinished edges ("raw edge"); no additional edge finishing is necessary.
  • Easy to maintain: High-quality wool makes boiled wool easy to care for. Since wool is naturally antibacterial, frequent washing is unnecessary.
  • Versatile use: Boiled wool fabrics can be used for warm jackets, children’s clothing, cozy blankets, or stylish hats. It is highly multifunctional. Boiled wool fabrics often vary in weight and construction, influencing their use. Lighter weights are used for shirts or sweaters, while heavier fabrics are ideal for jackets, skirts, or slippers.
  • Biodegradable: Wool decomposes completely in soil within about two months, making it an eco-friendly option.

How to care for boiled wool fabric

Boiled wool should generally be hand-washed or washed on a wool program in the washing machine. Avoid spinning, as this can cause further shrinkage. High temperatures and drying in the sun should also be avoided. When washing is necessary, cold hand washing is recommended. Because wool is self-cleaning and antibacterial, it is often enough to simply air out boiled wool items outdoors. Stubborn dirt should be left to dry and then brushed off. A soft, damp cloth can also be used to remove stains.

Is boiled wool eco-friendly?

Yes, when made from pure sheep’s wool, it is biodegradable and a sustainable resource. Eco-friendly production is also prioritised. All our suppliers are carefully selected, and our boiled wool fabrics are produced in Europe.
