SEERSUCKER, WHAT IS IT?
Seersucker is a light and summery fabric characterised by a certain irregularity, with small bulges upwards and downwards. Seersucker owes its high breathability, airiness and good performance on hot and humid days partly to this unique structure. The fabric stays ventilated and does not stick to the skin easily. It makes Seersucker fabrics perfect for e.g. summer blouses, dresses, shirts and shorts. The structure of this unique crinkled textile is created by applying tension differences in the warp on the loom. When steam-finished, these yarns shrink more or less, creating the crinkle effect.

TWO QUALITIES
The Seersucker is available in two qualities, a single crinkled and doubled crinkled.
The first, made from 100% organic cotton, has a more pronounced vertical stripe, only the warp threads have been effected by the finishing. The double crinkled weave has been made with 1% elastane. Its effect is most evident in the weft, because it gives the surface a kind of ton sur ton checkered appearance.
Both qualities have a weight of about 130 gr/m2 and a width of 155 cm. Created with the finest Aegean organic cotton and GOTS certified!
The Seersucker in the collection of ECOLOGICAL TEXTILES is made from organic cotton that was grown in Turkey, quite near to the Aegean Sea. Like all our organic cotton fabrics, this quality is processed in the same region where the cotton was grown. Fibres and fabrics are truly Aegean cotton. We have chosen for Aegean cotton because cotton fields and production plants are close to each other, the relative proximity to the Netherlands and because this cotton is known to be of a high quality, has a beautiful white colour and a good, easily spinnable, fibre length.

A FABRIC WITH A TRADITION
The Seersucker fabric was developed in the seventeenth century in India, as a cool, breathable and airy fabric from which to make clothes. The fabric got its name from its distinctive appearance. It is said to derive from the Persian words 'Shir' and 'Shakar', which translate as 'milk' and 'sugar'. The former for its soft and silky feel and the latter for its gritty texture.
Via England, the Seersucker reached Europe and America, where it was also welcomed as a perfect material for hot days or for certain professions. For instance, the striped Spanish military uniforms (Rayadillo) often were made from Seersucker. It was used in jackets, trousers and caps. Also in the US, Seersucker was used not only for light clothing but also for uniforms and utility wear.
In the early twenties of the last century the fabric also became a popular choice for more formal suits.
In the US Senate, there is even a Seersucker Day every year on the second thursday of June: many senators dress in clothes made of Seersucker fabric on that day.
